Poster; Downtown to Soho by bus and Tube, by Michael Bishop, commissioned for London Transport Art, 1996

Since its formation in the 1930s, London Transport (L.T.) has built a reputation for its advertising. In the early days, it commissioned innovative artists and designers to publicise its services. In more recent years, the company has commissioned original artworks that are intended to be appreciated as works of art. In 1996, L.T. commissioned this painting by Michael Bishop. It shows a lively Soho street scene at night. Bishop's painting of Compton Street was turned into a poster that was displayed in Underground stations across the system.
